Are They User Friendly?
Metal side gates may be erected in various configurations based on your project requirements and are built to exacting standards to deliver structural strength. They quickly pull open and closed by hand and have a pair of hinges fixed to one side of the gate (which you should attach to an appropriate structure such as an existing brick wall or post). A sliding or tipping latch, which you can secure with a padlock, is typically installed on the other side of the gate. However, if you'd like greater security or a more practical way of closing the gate, you may replace the latch with a heavy-duty mortise lock which you can operate with a key.
Do they Provide a High Level of Security?
Metal side gates are typically produced in many designs to suit your requirements. Generally 6ft high, this type of gate will make a great security addition to your home because they are challenging to climb. Due to this, they are very well suited to vulnerable access points around your property, including areas such as back gardens, alleyways and other secluded access points that lead to the rear of your property.
Do They Have Any Drawbacks?
Because metal gates are manufactured to have gaps between the vertical bars, they do not provide significant levels of privacy. Therefore, if you are looking for a gate with a solid panel, an aluminium pedestrian gate or a timber-side gate would be a better option. In addition to this, because they are tall, you need to ensure that the wall is of adequate height to attach the hinges and latch. If this is not possible, then metal posts will be essential.
Do They Need a Lot of Maintenance?
If you select a gate design that has been electro-galvanised (zinc plated) and powder coated with a paint finish, the maintenance required is very minimal. This is because the steel is well protected against rust and corrosion. Alternatively, if you choose a design that is only primed, the gate must first be painted before you install it, then will need additional painting every few years to keep it looking its best.
