Are you going to be away from home for a few days or weeks this summer? If so it will pay to remember the old saying of “appearances can be deceiving” as it could help to make you property that much more secure whilst you are away.
Short Term Vacant Period
If you are going away for a short period of time or you have a rental property that is awaiting new tenants then it will pay dividends to give the illusion that the property is still occupied. Here are some ideas that make this achievable.
- Make sure the grass is mowed and any fallen leaves are cleared away.
- Ensure that front garden gates are kept closed and where required secure side gates with a lock.
- Use timers on lights to create the illusion of an occupied property during the hours of darkness.
- Ensure all windows are shut and locked
- Consider asking a neighbour to park on your driveway (if applicable)
- Ask a neighbour to collect the mail.
- Install a dummy alarm box to act as a visual deterrent.
Long Term Vacancy
Where properties are to remain vacant for a prolonged period of time it is important that more comprehensive security precautions are in place. So whether you are going on a round the world trip or will be away for a few months on business why not consider some of the options we detailed below.
- Add highly visible CCTV cameras set to trigger on movement so footage can be stored for review at a later date.
- Employ the services of a security company to check the property or if this is not affordable ask a friendly neighbour to look in once a week to make sure the property is still secure.
- Have post redirected so it does not pile up by the front door.
- Ensure access points and garden fence panels will restrict access
- Install warning signs that the property is being monitored or is covered under a neighbourhood watch scheme.
- Make sure driveway gates are closed and locked securely.
In closing, whilst this guide may only be brief we hope that it has been able to provide you with all the information you need to make sure your property remains safe when it is vacant.
