Located down a quite side access road the owner of this property situated on the outskirts of Swindon was looking for a set of strong and sturdy wooden estate gates that would allow easy access onto the driveway whilst providing privacy and security for the cars parked on the driveway.

With customer contact initially made via our enquiry form, they provided us with the basic dimension of the opening and the height of the pillars. From this we were able to easily work out their size requirements.

After advising on the size required, one further particular point that they made clear was that the hinges were to be mounted directly to the back of the brickwork (rather than mounted to timber posts) as this would allow them to maintain the maximum clear drive through width and enable the gates to fold back 180 degrees against the wall.

The next stage of advice involved the gate design and on this occasion the customer was looking for a relatively simple style. Whilst we offered several options the preferred design was the Norfolk Wooden Estate Gates which have a physical height of 6ft (1830mm). The gates are handmade in the UK using traditional joinery techniques to give strength, rigidity and durability. They feature a 70mm thick framework combined with vertical tongue and groove infill boards making them the ideal choice where a simple style is preferred. Also, because the timber is smooth planed it is perfect for painting without the need for specialist coatings to be applied.

For the fittings, the customer selected 36” hook and band hinges however as the gates are to be operated with an automation kit a ring latch and drop bolts were not required.

As you can see from the photograph, the customer chose to paint the gates in a heritage green colour which perfectly offsets the white painted supporting pillars which in our opinion was the perfect choice for this location.
