& HelpDouble Wooden Gates Measuring Guide
We have created this extensive guide to help you select the correct size for our many wooden driveway gates and estate gates. Our gates are made from natural materials and are heavy, so choosing a "physical width" dimension that will fit your requirements is essential. Please take the time to read it all the way through, and if you have any questions, email us at any time.
How to Select the Correct Size - Installing Between Brick Walls
We recommend our double wooden gates are fitted onto timber posts to ensure the longevity of the installation.
To establish the correct size to order, we advise that you perform the following:
-
Measure the space between your brick walls or other masonry supports using a tape measure. When doing this, ensure you keep the tape measure taught to achieve accurate measurement.
-
Subtract the width of the posts you will use (post dimensions are visible in the options and accessories menu on the product pages) from your brickwork opening dimension.
-
When you have this figured out, you will need to deduct 40mm from the remaining measurement to allow for the hinges, latch and the timber's expansion and contraction throughout the seasons.
-
The remaining dimension will become the "physical width" of the gates you will need to order.
-
Once you know the "physical width" required, you can use this to find out which products are available to suit your requirements. Refer to the options shown in the wooden driveway gates and wooden estate gates category pages.
-
When you have found the design you want to order, choose the "physical width" option that corresponds to the dimension you calculated and click "add to cart". Remember to include the relevant posts and fitting pack if necessary.
NB* If you need further clarification, please see the "Ordering Examples" below.
Important Product Information - When Mounting Between Walls
Finding gates that meet your particular requirements might take time and effort. If you have tried to locate a size that fits your needs and you are still looking for a suitable option, you will need a custom size. As a potential substitute, you can adjust the posts' dimensions to accommodate one of our standard-width products.

Ordering Examples - Fitting Double Wooden Gates Between Existing Walls
Example 1 - Standard Size
In this example, if the gap between the brickwork is 2980mm, you can utilise the following:
- 1 x (pair) Standard-size double gates with a "physical width" of 2740mm
- 2 x 100mm Timber posts (wall mounted)
Example 2 - Made to Measure
In this example, if the gap between the brick walls is 3150mm, you will require the following:
- 1 x (pair) Made-to-measure double wooden gates with a "physical width" of 2910mm
- 2 x 100mm Timber posts (wall mounted)
Example 3 - Standard Size
In this example, if the opening between the walls measures 4000mm, you can utilise the following:
- 1 x (pair) Standard-size double wooden gates with a "physical width" of 3660mm
- 2 x 150mm Timber posts (wall mounted)
Example 4 - Made to Measure
In this example, if the gap between the brick walls is 3547mm, you will require the following:
- 1 x Made-to-measure wooden gate with a "physical width" of 3207mm
- 2 x 150mm Timber posts (wall mounted)

Double Gate Installations Using Timber Posts Set into the Ground
If there is no support structure for the gates, you will need set wooden posts into the ground for stability. Ensure you obtain the right size and length for these components because they will play an essential role in supporting your gates.
How to Establish the Size to Order - Freestanding Posts
-
Take an accurate measurement of the available space.
-
Deduct the width of the posts from this measurement (our post sizes are visible in the options and accessories menu of the product pages).
-
To account for the space needed for the hinges and latch and the seasonal expansion and contraction of the timber, you must then subtract 40mm from the remaining measurement.
-
The figure that remains will form the "physical width" of the gates you need to order.
-
You can now use the "physical width" to discover which designs will meet your needs. Look at the options presented on the category pages for wooden estate gates and driveway gates.
-
When you have located the design you want to buy, select the "physical width" option that correlates to the dimension you have previously established and click "add to cart". Remember to add the appropriate posts and fitting pack, if applicable.
NB* For further information, see the "Ordering Examples" section below.
Significant Information for Freestanding Installations
Selecting the correct size post is essential for freestanding installations. If you purchase gates measuring over 2440mm, we recommend 150mm posts. These will provide the optimal level of support.

In this example, if the overall space is 3390mm, you can utilise the following:
- 1 x (pair) Standard-size double gates with a "physical width" of 3050mm
- 2 x 150mm Timber posts (concreted into the ground)
Example 2 - Made to Measure
In this example, if the overall space is 3595mm, you will require the following:
- 1 x (pair) Made-to-measure double wooden gates with a "physical width" of 3255mm
- 2 x 150mm Timber posts (concreted into the ground)
Example 3 - Standard Size
In this example, if the overall space is 2370mm, you can utilise the following:

Example 4 - Made to Measure
In this example, if the overall space is 2000mm, you will require the following:
- 1 x (pair) Made-to-measure double wooden gates with a "physical width" of 1760mm
- 2 x 100mm Timber posts (concreted into the ground)
Important Information & General Product Advice
-
Wooden driveway and estate gates are sold as a pair.
-
The measurements in the drop-down menu describe the total "physical width" of the pair of gates. It does not refer to the width of each gate individually.
-
The "physical height" dimension is taken from the underside of the gate to the highest point (unless specified otherwise).
-
The "physical width" is not the same as your opening size between your posts. To allow space for the hinges and opening tolerances, the gap between the posts should be approximately 40mm wider than the actual width of the gates.
-
You must purchase the hinges, latch and other associated fittings separately.
-
You must securely fasten wall-mounted timber posts to the brickwork to guarantee a reliable installation. Make sure the brickwork is in adequate condition to support the posts. Any degradation, cracks, or other apparent flaws might result in insufficient gate support levels. It may put it in danger of toppling over.
-
"In ground" posts must be the correct size to support the weight of the gates you purchase.
-
In the absence of a support structure, the posts should be buried between 600 and 900 mm, depending on the ground conditions, and secured with concrete.
-
We only recommend using hook and band hinges, as these components provide the best level of support.
-
The hinges need to attach to the rear face of the gates for installations that require an inward opening movement. If the gates open outwards, you must install the hinges on the front face. In either scenario, they should be mounted onto the horizontal bracing, as seen in the sample photographs below. Consult our general installation guide for additional details.
