How to Measure the Aperture/Opening - Fitting Between Brick Walls

We recommend that our wooden gates be fitted onto timber posts. You should perform the following:

  1. Measure the opening size between your brick walls or other masonry supports

  2. Deduct the width of the posts you will use from this measurement (the post dimensions are visible in the options and accessories menu on the product pages).

  3. You will then need to deduct 20mm from the remaining figure (this is the space for the hinges and latch and allows for the timber's expansion and contraction throughout the seasons).

  4. The remaining dimension will be the "physical width" of the gate you need to order.

  5. Once the "physical width" is known, you can refer back to the products available in the wooden garden gate and wooden side gate category pages.

  6. When you locate a "physical width" measurement corresponding to the dimension you have calculated, you should choose that option and click "add to basket."

NB* Refer to the "Ordering Examples" below if you want additional clarity.

Important Product Information - When Mounting Between Walls

If you have tried to find a wooden gate that suits your needs, but it is impossible to find one, then, unfortunately, you need a custom-made size. Alternatively, you can amend the dimensions of the posts so that they will suit one of our standard-width products.

  • 2 x 100mm Timber posts

Example 2 - Made to Measure

In this example, if the gap between the brick walls is 1200mm, you will require:

Example 3 - Standard Size

Single Wooden Gates Installed with Posts Set into the Ground

You will need to add wooden posts if there is no support structure. It is crucial to obtain the correct size and length for these components since they need to be buried and fastened with concrete.

How to Measure & Determine the Correct Size - Freestanding Posts

  1. Measure the overall available space. When doing this, ensure you have enough space to house the gate and the posts.

  2. Subtract the width of the posts from this dimension (the post dimensions are visible in the options and accessories menu on the product pages).

  3. After calculating this, you will need to deduct 20mm from the remaining figure (this is the space for the hinges and latch and allows for the timber's expansion and contraction throughout the seasons).

  4. The remaining dimension will be the physical width of the gate you need to order.

  5. When you know the "physical width," you may refer to the goods listed on the wooden side and garden gates category pages.

  6. Choose the option corresponding to the dimension you calculated and click "add to cart" when you find a "physical width" measurement of your preferred gate design.

NB* Refer to the "Ordering Examples" below if you want additional clarity

Important Product Information for Freestanding Installations

If you have tried to find a wooden gate that matches you requirements but have not be able to, you need a custom-made size. Alternatively, if you can adjust the spacing between the posts you can still use one of our standard-width products.

Essential Information & General Product Advice

  • The dimensions in the drop-down menu depict the products' "physical width" and "physical height".

  • The "physical width" is different from the opening/gap size. The gap between the posts should be approximately 20mm wider than the actual width of the gate.

  • The "physical height" is measured from the underside of the gate to its highest point. No provision for ground clearance is included.

  • You must purchase the hinges, latch and other associated fittings separately.

  • To ensure a safe and long-lasting installation, you must adequately fix wall-mounted timber posts to the brickwork. You should check that the brickwork is sufficiently good to attach the posts. Any deterioration, breaks or other visible defects may lead to unacceptable gate support levels. It could leave it at risk of falling over.

  • "In ground" posts must be the size to support the gate.

  • Where no support structure is present, the posts should be set to a depth of between 600-900mm depending on ground conditions and held in place using concrete.

  • We only recommend using hook and band hinges, as these will provide the most effective level of support for your gate.

  • For inward-opening configurations, the hinges should be mounted to the back face of the gate. If you need to have the gate open outwards, you must fit the hinges to the front face. In either instance, as shown in the example pictures below, they should be attached to the horizontal bracing to attain a sufficient level of support.
