Useful Information About the Hampton Double Gates
Width Dimensions: The Hampton wooden driveway gates are sold as a pair. The width dimensions listed in the menu above refer to the total width of both gates when placed side by side. For clarification this means that each pair comprises of the following:
-
2400mm pair = 2 x 1200mm
-
2700mm pair = 2 x 1350mm
-
3000mm pair = 2 x 1500mm
-
3300mm pair = 2 x 1650mm
-
3600mm pair = 2 x 1800mm
Height Dimensions: This is measured from the underside of the gates to the highest point. We have made no allowance for ground clearance within this measurement. As a general guide we normally suggest leaving a gap of 50mm (2”) but this may vary to suit site constraints such as sloping driveways, steps or other similar obstructions.
Fittings: The Hampton design does not include the necessary hinges, latch or drop-bolt that will be required to complete the installation. If you need to order these items, please select the appropriate fitting pack from the options and accessories menu at the top of the page.
Posts: We recommend the use of wooden posts when installing the gates. For installation between exiting masonry the use of wall mounted posts is acceptable. For freestanding installations, it will be necessary to use in ground posts. In both instances the gap formed between the posts should be 40mm wider than the width of the gates you order to provide sufficient space for the hinges and to allow for a small amount of movement of the timber throughout the seasons.
Finish: The Hampton gates are manufactured from pressure treated smooth planed softwood. This low maintenance finish removes the need to stain or paint the timber prior to installation. Please do note however that the pressure treatment process will result in timber having a green tint to it upon delivery. This is normal and will weather down over time to give a more natural appearance.
Installation: Hook and band type hinges are only recommended when hanging the gates. They should be of an appropriate size to provide the required level of support and should be mounted to the top and bottom horizontal rails. For more information read the installation guide.

Calculating the Size | Freestanding Installations Using Wooden Posts
What Size Opening Will Be Required Between the Wooden Posts?
If you are fitting the wooden gates between existing timber posts (with the hinges fitted on the back face of the gate/post), then we recommend the following space is available.
Physical Width of the Pair of Gates Width of Opening Required Between Posts 2400mm 2440mm 2700mm 2740mm 3000mm 3040mm 3300mm 3340mm 3600mm 3640mm NB* sizes are based on the options shown in the drop-down menu.
What If I Need to Add Wooden Posts?
You must consider the extra space required for installations that demand wooden posts.
The calculation is carried out as follows:
Physical width of gates + width of posts (2 x 100mm is sufficient if using wall-mounted posts or 2 x 150mm if freestanding posts are utilised)
+ 40mm (space needed for hinges, latch and opening tolerances).
= Total Overall Space Required
Example
A pair of 3300mm gates combined with 2 x 150mm posts will require a total overall space of 3640mm.
What Size Hinges and Fittings Do I Require to Complete the Installation?
We suggest using 18" or 24" hook and band hinges (depending on the size of the gates you order). We also recommend you add 1 x ring latch and a minimum of 1 x drop bolt to keep the gates shut.
Installation Guide ►
We can offer you the following optional extras and posts to complement the Hampton gates.
-
100mm x 100mm Square Timber Posts (ideal for wall mounting to existing brick pillars or for in-ground applications when fitting smaller double gates)
-
